How to Create, Customize and Verify Google My Business Account

Google is the most widely used search engine in the world. Hence, it has almost become the best tool for marketers to reach online consumers. Among the many useful Google products is the Google My Business Account.

Google My Business is a free tool that allows business owners to create an online profile for their businesses. You can provide details and photos of your business, including your location, products or services.

These days, people rely on Google for almost everything. So, the more your business can be found in search results, the higher your chances of getting potential customers your way.

1. Create a Google My Business Account

If you log into your Google account, you will automatically be logged into Google Business Profile, otherwise you’ll need to create a Google Account.

You can either use an existing email to set up your Google Account or you can create a new one. For a new email, visit and select ‘create an account’ to get started.

2. Visit the Google My Business Profile Manager

Once you have your new email address, head to and click ‘Manage now’ to get started.

3. Look for the Business Account

Type in your official business name to see if the name already exists. If it does not appear in the drop-down menu, click ‘Add your business to Google’.

Don’t be tempted to add any keywords into the name as this violates Google’s guidelines. After entering the name, select the category that matches your business and click ‘Next’.

How to Request Access to an Existing Google My Business Account

If someone has already created a Google Business Profile with your business name, you can request that management of the profile be handed over to you.

Simply click ‘Request Access’ and you’ll be guided through the process.

4. Enter the location of your business

If the business has a physical location that potential customers can visit to make a purchase, then select ‘Yes’ and click ‘Next’. Try to give a more accurate and complete location or address.

Sometimes, you may be given a pin to point at the exact location on the Google Maps. However, if you operate an online business with no physical location that customers can visit, select ‘No’.

Note: Your business could be suspended or removed entirely from google in the future if you lie about having a physical location just to manipulate your local rankings. This is a violation of Google guidelines.

5. Add contact details

The next step is to add your business phone number, email and your website so customers can reach you. When you’re done with that section, click Next.

6. Verify Google My Business Account

At this point, you need to input your real physical location address, not a post office box. This information is only used to verify your business and is not displayed on your Google Business Profile or shared with the public.

Enter your address and click Next. You’ll be shown options to choose to verify your account. You’ll have the option to use get a postcard by mail, email or via phone to verify their location.

7. Customize your Business Profile

Here, you need to fill in your business hours, business description and some photos of your products, services or business premises. When you’ve entered those details, you click ‘Continue’.

You will be launched to you Google My Business dashboard, where you can manage your business profile, view insights, manage reviews and messages, and create Google ads.


There are many reasons you need to create a Google My Business Account. With your business profile present online, you’re already miles ahead of your competitors in reaching out to local area customers.

Know that, you’ll be able to come back and edit any information later. So don’t panic if your business has changed location, has a new website or new contact details.
